Anyone used a Panasonic dvx100 ?

I'm upgrading my camera and this seems to be something a bit special. Anyone used it before ?

I have and I think that it is mostly hype. I found the camera to be sub-par. First off you don't have true manual focus. Second you are still limited by the MiniDv format meaning 4:1:1 color and it is NTSC or PAL resolution...Then when you go to 16:9 it shuts down the CCD so you loose lines...

If you are going to spend that kind of cash I think that there are better options. Such as a used BetaSP camera. Or if you want DV an XL1s with a fully manual lens.

I mixed two of the DVX 100 cameras on a live, 4 camera video shoot with two Higher end Industrial Quality BetaCam SP cameras. The cameras mixed quite well.

I've heard a couple of comments about broken time-code when loading into the computer, but those are not shoots I was directly involved in so that's all I can share.

I would suggest you bring a mini-dv tape into the place you may be buying it from and see if they will let you shoot with the camera right in the store. Stop and start the camera, several times, and then see if it loads into your computer without time-code break issues.

The 100A came out recently. The best way to find out about the 100 is to ask them about the 100A. Usually an overzealous salesperson will tell you about all the improvements the 100A has over the 100 but in the process you will learn what is actually got fixed that was not right with the 100!

And of course the 100 should be at least $200-$300 dollars cheaper than the 100A, perhaps discounted even more than that.
